Michael was killed by a remote controlled IRA bomb, which was hidden in a wall in Cathedral Road whilst serving in Northern Ireland. He was on a foot patrol with six other men in Armagh when they were ambushed and the bomb detonated. He died in a Belfast hospital 11 hours later from his injuries. The six other men in the patrol survived.
The youngest of four children and a former St Joseph’s RC High School pupil, Michael joined the service in March 1989 aged just 17. He was sent to the Regimental Base at Ballykinlar in August 1991. In May 1992, he narrowly avoided being killed in another IRA bomb blast at a checkpoint in Cloghogue.
Every year a trophy named in his honour is presented to the best Lance Corporal at his former Barracks.
